Despite Kenya’s abundant agricultural potential, food security and adequate nutrition remain elusive for many communities because the country’s agricultural systems still struggle with structural weaknesses: low adoption of resilient farming technologies, limited access to reliable markets and storage infrastructure, unpredictable climate shocks that erode productivity, and fragmented value chains that trap smallholder farmers in cycles of subsistence rather than sustainable production.
These persistent gaps mean that even when food is grown, it is unevenly distributed, post-harvest losses are high, and farmers earn too little to invest in better inputs or buffer against droughts and market swings; creating the conditions where localized famine and malnutrition still occur.
